Friday Finds is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading to showcase books you recently found and added to your TBR (to be read) list. It doesn’t matter whether you found them free online, borrowed them from a library or purchased them. Anything and everything works.
I have two this week and, luckily for my budget, both are library books.
A Pirate Looks at Fifty by Jimmy Buffett is a no-brainer for me since I’ve long been a fan of his music.
I am more ambivalent about Dead Until Dark (Sookie Stackhouse #1) by Charlaine Harris. These are the books on which the HBO series True Blood is based. I overdosed on vampire stories during the 90s and so many of the newer ones simply don’t catch my interest. When Hannah featured the tenth book, Dead in the Family, in one of her Teaser Tuesdays earlier this month, I noticed the author’s name. I had enjoyed Harris’ Aurora Teagarden series earlier, so it wouldn’t be like trying a new author. Then I discovered my local library has them and decided to start with the first one and see how it goes.
Are you a fan of Jimmy Buffett and his music? Have you read any of the Sookie Stackhouse series? Please share your Friday Finds with us! Just leave a comment with the link to your own Friday Finds post on MizB’s blog or here. Or you may share your finds in a comment here anyway. We’d love to know what you found this week.
Madame Vauquer,
I read the first Snookie Stackhouse book for an SF/F f-t-f discussion group. Found it silly and haven’t read another one and don’t intend to.
Friday Find: a collection of short stories by Lu Hsun (aka Lu Xun), SELECTED STORIES BY LU HSUN. Stumbled across it in a used book store while looking for something else. According to articles about him, he is the most important Chinese writer of the 20th century and is considered the father of modern Chinese lit. Below is the url leading to a blog post I placed about one of the short stories in the collection.

That’s rather how I’ve imagined the Sookie Stackhouse books to be, Fred, and why I never tried one before. I enjoy reading books where the protagonists approach their situations with humor, so we’ll see how it goes.
Thanks for leaving your link to share with others – and me, I missed that when it first showed up on your blog.

I like the first few Sookie Stackhouse books, but after a while, I got sick of them. I hope you like it!

I had to look up the Jimmy Buffett book, out of curiousity. I didn’t realize he’d written so many books! Even kids books, it looks like.

I was surprised myself about a year ago. I only knew about Where is Joe Merchant? I must have seen in it a mystery section or somewhere like that because I didn’t see any of the others.

Thanks, Cleo. I like her writing style, so we’ll see how it goes. I just started but have only read a few pages. Humor and action both so far.

Early days yet, but so far I like it. First person narrative is my favorite style. Harris has come up with some great vampire lore while Bill and Sookie are talking.
