One of the topics this week is Where to find eBooks online. I’ll be mentioning sites for free eBooks, most of which are in public domain. What a boon for lovers of classic literature.
The first place I always check is Project Gutenberg. I even use their recent additions page as my home page. The main link is for the United States site. If you are in another country, you can check here for further information. Project Gutenberg books are no longer limited to plain text, but are available in a variety of formats to fit any reader or mobile device.
The Online Books Page headed by John Mark Ockerbloom is a resource I check frequently. Mary Mark Ockerbloom brings us A Celebration of Women Writers.
A third option is ManyBooks.
There are too many more to list, but this highlights the largest and user-friendly ones I’ve found.

Thanks, Nancy! I’ve heard that some vendors sell complete collections for 99 cents which can be more convenient than downloading all an author’s work individually.

Following on from SilverSeason’s comment and your reply, the Delphi complete works collections are great. Only a couple of ££s and you get all the novels, short stories, loads of illustrations (usually the originals) and lots of bits and bobs, like biographies of the author, thrown in. I have loads of them – sadly, I never get round to actually reading any of them!

And my favourite site for freebies is NetGalley, of course, for new publications. Well worth the time it takes to write a review to get some of the new releases for free…

Hi Dagny, for French books I gobto enooksgratuits.com they have all the e-readers’ formats. As for French audio books, there is no site that beats litteratureaudio.com Though most of their works are from the public domain, sometimes they are able to convince current writers the permission to read one of their books, for example they have Thomas Sandoz’s La Fanée

I think it was Karen who put me onto ManyBooks. They’re mostly public domain books. Once in a while I find something there that isn’t on Project Gutenberg.
I’ve heard about readers becoming inundated by their NetGalley requests. 🙂

Thanks for the list. I’ve recently gone digital and am listening to more audiobooks and reading on my ereader. I’m gonna check out Librivox and see if the list is extensive for people outside of the US.

Excellent, Natasha. If you think about it, please report back about LibriVox and how accessible it is for your area. Also any other sites, so readers will know. The U.S. currently seems to have one of the strictest copyright laws, so hopefully you’ll be able to access most, if not all, of them.

I’ve subscribed to SweetFreeBooks and BookBub… they send me daily emails with book deals… I’ve got some really books through them for free, even some free book-sets… 🙂 The deals are mostly of Amazon and Smash Words. And of course NetGalley… I’ve even got auto-approved by 2 publishers (which is quite a lot considering my poor ratio of 4%… lol!)
