Teaser Tuesdays – July 1, 2014

LetterFamilyRead

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.

Anyone can participate.

If you’re new to Teaser Tuesdays, the details are at MizB’s Should Be Reading or on my Teaser Tuesday Page.

My Teaser Tuesdays book for this week is a travel one.

Six Months in Mexico
by Nellie Bly
(Elizabeth Jane Cochran)

SixMonths

The prompter’s box is fixed in front of the stage, and his voice is not only heard continually above that of the actors, but his candle and hands are always visible, and he often takes time to peep out and take a survey of the audience; but the Mexicans do not notice him any more than the footlights. A bell, which sounds as heavy as a church bell, rings and the curtain falls.

Six Months in Mexico can be read at A Celebration of Women Writers where you can also find Around the World in Seventy-two Days and Ten Days in a Mad-House.

Six Months in Mexico is a travel book. I am finding it interesting enough but prefer the other two. Around the World in Seventy-two Days provides the excitement of the race in addition to visits to many lands instead of just one. Ten Days in a Mad-House is the story of Nellie’s ordeal undercover in an asylum.

Nellie Bly Online is a good resource for facts about her. Copies of many of her articles are available there.

What are you reading now? Do you have a TT to share with us?

Please leave a comment with your link on MizB’s Teaser Tuesday post or below. If you don’t have a blog, you can share your Teaser here in the comment section instead.

  3. I’ve never read any of Nellie Bly’s books, but they sound fascinating. I’ll try Around the World in Seventy-Two Days first. Thanks for the recommendation and for stopping by my blog.

  6. Thanks for sharing such an interesting book. I recently learned about a historical fiction series in which Nellie Bly is a character, so I appreciate your link to the website about her. Let’s hear it for adventurous women…where would we be without female pioneers?! And thanks for visiting my blog.

    • Maybe it is just me since I used to live in the SW and have been to Mexico several times, but I am not liking this book anywhere nearly as much as Around the World in Seventy-two Days.

  8. I like the build up of the scene!? Is he a performer? And if so, what is his talent!? I’m looking for a non-fiction book for my reading challenge, I’ll look into this one; thanks for sharing! 🙂

    • The scene quoted is just a passing scene when Nellie and her mother were attending a play. I thought it was funny because the Prompter, who would generally be offstage and barely whispering was quite prominent.

If you’re looking for a non-fiction for a reading challenge and want to go with one of Nellie Bly’s books, I’d advise one of the other two mentioned above. Around the World relates Nellie’s trip to prove that Jules Verne’s Around the World in Eighty Days could be done. If you like a lot of drama, Ten Days relates how Nellie went undercover and got herself committed to an insane asylum to report on mistreatment of patients.

Interesting image! While I have heard of Nellie Bly I’ve never read anything by her. My teasers are from Shield of Winter by Nalini Singh and Midnight Thief by Livia Blackburne. Happy reading!
