My Teaser Tuesdays book for this week is a travel one.
Six Months in Mexico

The prompter’s box is fixed in front of the stage, and his voice is not only heard continually above that of the actors, but his candle and hands are always visible, and he often takes time to peep out and take a survey of the audience; but the Mexicans do not notice him any more than the footlights. A bell, which sounds as heavy as a church bell, rings and the curtain falls.
Six Months in Mexico can be read at A Celebration of Women Writers where you can also find Around the World in Seventy-two Days and Ten Days in a Mad-House.
Six Months in Mexico is a travel book. I am finding it interesting enough but prefer the other two. Around the World in Seventy-two Days provides the excitement of the race in addition to visits to many lands instead of just one. Ten Days in a Mad-House is the story of Nellie’s ordeal undercover in an asylum.
Nellie Bly Online is a good resource for facts about her. Copies of many of her articles are available there.

Thanks for sharing such an interesting book. I recently learned about a historical fiction series in which Nellie Bly is a character, so I appreciate your link to the website about her. Let’s hear it for adventurous women…where would we be without female pioneers?! And thanks for visiting my blog.

I’ve heard of that series also, Catherine. Good and bad both as is often the case. One of my very favorites when it comes to adventurous women is My Journey to Lhasa by Alexandra David-Néel.

Maybe it is just me since I used to live in the SW and have been to Mexico several times, but I am not liking this book anywhere nearly as much as Around the World in Seventy-two Days.

The scene quoted is just a passing scene when Nellie and her mother were attending a play. I thought it was funny because the Prompter, who would generally be offstage and barely whispering was quite prominent.
If you’re looking for a non-fiction for a reading challenge and want to go with one of Nellie Bly’s books, I’d advise one of the other two mentioned above. Around the World relates Nellie’s trip to prove that Jules Verne’s Around the World in Eighty Days could be done. If you like a lot of drama, Ten Days relates how Nellie went undercover and got herself committed to an insane asylum to report on mistreatment of patients.
