Realizing the reality of TV cameras — Surviving Alaska is easy, compared to surviving the filming process

One of my very favorite programs! I enjoy the journeys vicariously.

The Mouth of The Kenai

Editor’s note: This is part two of a two-part story about a Soldotna mountaineer’s adventures in TV land. Part One can be found in the Jan. 28 Redoubt Reporter.

Of the “Ultimate Survival Alaska” TV show, Soldotna’s Tyler Johnson had the first two words licked. Ultimate survival is supposedly the hardest part of the National Geographic Channel show, in which teams of outdoorsmen navigate through the wilds of the Alaska backcountry, crossing glaciers, fording rivers, climbing mountains and conquering whatever other obstacles lie in their path with just the gear on their backs.

The 38-year-old has been “surviving” the backcountry of Alaska since he was a kid, starting out hiking in the Chugach Mountains of the Kenai Peninsula; graduating…

Orphan Black: Alison Takes Charge

Alison, how you’ve changed.

Alison-and-Sarah

No more drinking yourself into oblivion and passing out, no more sticking your head in the sand and not wanting to know.

Alison is such a fun character. Hard to believe that I actually didn’t like her much in the beginning, but that soon ended.

This post on the Orphan Black Fansite blog recaps Alison’s progression from soccer mom into one tough lady who does what needs to be done (and more). It’s part of their Clone Wars and if you visit in the next few days, you can vote for Alison.

Free Time Fridays – October 31, 2014

WitchReadFTF

Free Time Fridays is a weekly meme created and hosted by Shannon (who currently doesn’t have any Free Time due to a recent move) at eatupmyfreetime.

If you’re new to Free Time Fridays, the details are at eatupmyfreetime here.

I’ve watched two movie marathons and an assortment of old horror movies in this week leading up to Halloween.

WelcomeSignburtgummer
First up was a four movie marathon of Tremors. These were fun to revisit, but I actually prefer the television series from 2003. Michael Gross is perfect as Burt Gummer.

A five movie Alien Nation marathon is in progress. Three down, two to go. These also make me want to re-watch the entire series.

Right in the midst of all the movies, there was a special Halloween team challenge at Fun Trivia featuring six exploding pumpkins. On the book front, I finished Burn by Nevada Barr which was due at the library. Not that our dear librarians would have placed a voodoo curse on me had I been late, but one never knows what esoteric knowledge might be picked up through reading and it was set in New Orleans.

That pretty much sums up my free time for this past week. It’s your turn now. How did you spend your free time this week or what are you looking forward to this weekend?

Aside from reading and playing trivia, I spent a lot of time watching television over the past week. One of the highlights was Tommy Chong’s performance of the Tango with Peta Murgatroyd on Dancing With the Stars. Tommy, at age 76, was absolutely amazing. The team finished third of ten couples.

FuscoReese2014Sept

Last week was the return of Person of Interest. This season is interesting since the entire team is on the run from Samaritan and have been forced to take on new identities. In a nice twist, Reese is a detective and now Fusco’s partner! I loved Fusco’s wicked little smile this week as he left a stack of paperwork on Reese’s desk.

I’m sure there must have been other things I’ve done this past week, but what they are escapes me at the moment. It’s your turn now. How did you spend your free time this week or what are you looking forward to this weekend?

The past week I finished two non-fiction books I’ve been reading for a while: Letters from Africa by Karen Blixen and Balzac’s Omelette by Anka Muhlstein. I also started A Pirate Looks at Fifty by Jimmy Buffett. I don’t read a lot of non-fiction so this is an unusual number of non-fiction books for me to have going at once.

I finished two fictions works this week. The first was a short story by Jack Finney, Of Missing Persons. Finney is the author of Time and Again which is a masterpiece of time travel. He’s also the author of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, the basis for several movies. The other book I finished was Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris, the first book of the Sookie Stackhouse series.

On the tv front, I watched the season premieres of Person of Interest and Survivor. Of the new series I sampled, Gotham and Forever were my favorites.

Did I actually ever leave the house? Oh yes, the highlight of my week was getting my flu shot, lol.

That pretty much sums up my free time for this past week. It’s your turn now. How did you spend your free time this week or what are you looking forward to this weekend?

How to Be Awesome Like Alison Hendrix

AlisonAlisonHendrix

Great post on Alison!

girls like giants

Welcome to the final day of Orphan Black Week on Girls Like Giants! We launched this discussion last week with a post on the patriarchal metaphor that structures the show. This week we’ve been featuring a series of “How To Be Awesome Like…” posts on the women of “clone club.” Today our final contributor, Rachel B., gets at the heart inside the neuroses of Alison Hendrix.

Guest Contributor Rachel B.

In Orphan Black’s first episode, Alison Hendrix is nothing more than a Social Security card in a safe deposit box. At first glance, this seems an apt metaphor for the woman herself: contained within the cold, sterile routine of her highly regulated suburban life. Unable to think or live outside the box. Indeed, when Felix asks Sarah early in Season 1 why she decides not to inform Alison about the more frightening characteristics of the as-yet unidentified Helena, Sarah explains that if…
