Madame Michel has the elegance of the hedgehog: on the outside, she’s covered in quills, a real fortress, but my gut feeling is that on the inside, she has the same simple refinement as the hedgehog: a deceptively indolent little creature, fiercely solitary – and terribly elegant.
Well, having said that, I admit it: I’m not a clairvoyant.

First Chapter/First Paragraph/Tuesday Intros is hosted by Bibliophile By The Sea. To play along, share the first paragraph (or a few) from a book you’re reading or thinking about reading soon.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays, Manuela, my only friend, comes for tea with me in my lodge. Manuela is a simple woman and twenty years wasted stalking dust in other people’s homes has in no way robbed her of her elegance. Besides, stalking dust is a very euphemistic way to put it. But where the rich are concerned, things are rarely called by their true name.

The Elegance of the Hedgehog
(L’elegance du herisson)
by Muriel Barbery
What are you currently reading? Do you have anything to share with us?
I loved Elegance Of The Hedgehog when I read it a few years ago. Beautifully written and with wonderfully nuanced characters. Hope you love it too!

Thanks. I’m over halfway. It’s quite varied. Some parts I like, others not so much. I agree though that it is beautifully written. I’m becoming quite fond of Renée.

I know. It’s quite an interesting title. I was wondering where it/how originated. Yours looks like a lovely holiday read.

This book has been recommended to me by a friend but I haven’t gotten around to reading it. Sounds like I should! I like the opening and your teaser.
My Tuesday post features The Beach House.

So far I’m liking the latter part better than the beginning. What a warm change yours this week is from all the seasonal ones mentioned!

I have heard such mixed reviews about this one. I have a copy on my shelf and hope to get to it one of these days. I like the opening and teaser you shared quite a bit.

It took me a while to get into it, but as I mentioned to Sandra above, I began to get quite interested in the story after the halfway point.

I discovered this at the back of the bookshelf tonight. I’d forgotten I bought it at the same time as her novel The Gourmand which was ok but not stunning.

In general I’m more fond of 19th Century French Literature than the modern French authors. I’m probably a bit prejudiced since Balzac and Zola are two of my favorite authors. I see you’ve read both.

Same here. The only modern french author I’ve enjoyed in recent years is Modiano.

Thanks, Diane. I wish I could join in more often. Tuesdays are such busy days for me and I seem to forget to set one up on Sunday or Monday.

It is truly beautifully written, Cleo. Even when the story takes a detour that isn’t of much interest, the prose is lovely to read. In addition to the author, we have the translator Alison Anderson to thank.

Thank you. I was glad to be able to use a teaser which explained the title.
