Last Hurrah for Buck’s Pocket State Park

Overhang

Earlier this week, I visited Buck’s Pocket State Park. It was a beautiful sunny day, one of only a very few recently. The Park is one of the Alabama State Parks which is closing due to budget cuts. It will close on Monday.

It’s a shame it will be closing. What’s going to happen to the land – left wild, developed, sold?

As far as I know the state will still own the land and hopefully reopen it at some point in time. I forget the number of parks which were scheduled to close because of funding and the economy. It was in the teens, I think.

Buck’s Pocket was either the first or second park I visited when I moved to Alabama. I rarely went to the lower part where there are campsites and amenities. I loved the overlook. I’ve stood there and looked down at buzzards flying.

It surely doesn’t cost that much to keep a park open?

I think the figures for Buck’s pocket were something like thirty thousand revenue and over one hundred thousand expenditure. The thing is, it’s not just the one park, but all the ones closing. Sad though.
