The hunt is on for scholar Sylvestre Bonnard in this classic French novel from 1881. A member of the Académie Française, France (Jacques Anatole François Thibault) was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1921.
The Crime of Sylvestre Bonnard
by Anatole France
“And why,” I asked myself, “why should I have learned that this precious book exists, if I am never to possess it–never even to see it? I would go to seek it in the burning heart of Africa, or in the icy regions of the Pole if I knew it were there.
I’m reading the English translation from Project Gutenberg (free here), but was fascinated by the Romanian cover shown above.

Oh, I might have to borrow that quite for a Wordsmitten Wednesday post – it expresses exactly how I feel about out of print and rare books!

Feel free! I know what you mean, there are some books I really covet. With these days of Internet searching, I find them now and again, but can’t afford them. 😦

It’s written in journal form which suits me perfectly since I like first person narrative. Best part, it’s free to check out for anyone who might be interested.
Thanks for coming by to comment and leave your link. Yours sounds interesting too.

I’m finding this one a much easier read than the other two books I’ve read by France.

Thanks, Cleo. Early in the book, I laughed when his housekeeper remarked that he had thousands and thousands of books and that she had only two and they were enough for her. Guess she didn’t like dusting them, lol.
I agree about Project Gutenberg. Wonderful for fans of older books. Thanks for coming by to comment and for leaving your link for everyone.

Quite different from Stephen King! I still remember when I read The Shining. That topiary maze was the scariest part for me, really horrific.

Bonnard is indeed a book lover, Laura. I fear his little book-finding expeditions will put mine to shame. I wish I had that cover, sigh.

Thanks, Juli, hope your week is going great also. I see you enjoy classics, PG is such a wonderful resource for fans of older books. They’ve saved me a lot of money over the twenty years I’ve been reading their ebooks. I read on my computer for years before I bought my ebook reader.
