Teaser Tuesdays – January 13, 2015

1890ImpTenementTeaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.

Anyone can participate.

If you’re new to Teaser Tuesdays, the details are at MizB’s Should Be Reading or on my Teaser Tuesdays Page.

Another classic for me this week, a blockbuster of over 800 pages. Close to the halfway point now and loving it so far.

Fortunata and Jacinta
by Benito Pérez Galdós

FortunataAndJacinta

And now our attention must shift to the Dauphin’s visit to his family’s friend and humble servant, for if Juanito Santa Cruz had not paid that visit, this story would not have been written. Another story surely would have been written, because wherever man goes he carries his novel with him; but it would not have been this one.

  1. That’s an interesting teaser! I hadn’t heard of this one but I’ll have to make a note to check it out.

It is long! I’m about at the halfway point and loving it. Benito Pérez Galdós is generally rated as the best Spanish writer after Cervantes. It’s not like reading a classic though, it feels quite modern. Or maybe I just read too much 19th century books, lol.

      • Lol. The writing seems like a classic, but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t like it. I’ll have to give it a shot soon.

Sadly, there aren’t any translations in public domain. Penguin Classics put one out in the 70s, so it pretty much has to be picked up used.

You’re in Mississippi, right? I’m right next door in Alabama. It’s promised to an online buddy in Georgia. I can easily ask her to pass it on to you after she reads it. It’s a group read with a discussion schedule, so she’ll be getting it toward the end of February. If you’re interested you can let me know and DM me sometime at Goodreads or Twitter with your address.

        • As much as I’d like that, it’s probably best if I don’t. I’m trying to read more of the books I already own before I get any more because my physical TBR is starting to get a little out of hand. I’d rather you send it to someone who’ll have time to read it! But maybe in the future. 🙂

Righto. I can understand that and it is such a long one too.

It is, isn’t it? But the book isn’t like that at all. I probably should have turned the page, lol. But I do love that quote since the last line pertains to our own lives.

Thanks for coming by to comment and leave your TT. I’ve heard so much about that book – it was already on my horizon.

  3. A dauphin? Oh man, I love stories that revolve around kings of France; so much drama and tragedy. I do hope you’re enjoying this one 🙂

Oh, I hate to tell you, but no Kings here in either France or Spain. It’s just what the overprotective and very overindulgent mother calls her spoiled son. I guess you could call it a family saga.

I like that. You carry your story around with you. Never really thought of it that way.

  5. Sounds good, I quite like the voice in the teaser as it seems to talk a lot of truth – thanks for visiting my TT https://cleopatralovesbooks.wordpress.com/2015/01/13/teaser-tuesday-january-13/

Thanks, Cleo. Afterwards, I thought maybe it wasn’t such a good choice since it’s not really representative of the writing/story in general. But it’s so great! I just couldn’t pass it up.

Thanks for commenting and leaving your link. Interesting title for your TT this week.

  6. Oh, I like that one! And it’s so true. 800 pages is a hefty read. Enjoy!

I like the image of man carrying his novel with him. Whatever we’re doing, we’re adding to the story of our lives. Great teaser!
